Set in Toronto in the near future, The Legend Of Shadow tells the story of a scientist and his genetically altered experiments, and what happens when he's gone too far. Meet James Porter. An albino standing at seven feet in his stockings, he's always stood out in a crowd. But no one could tell by looking at him what suffering he's undergone in his twenty years of life; sent to a mental institution at age thirteen, he was found three years later by Professor Malcolm Renwick, who released him only to experiment on him.

Not long after James escapes, free for the first time in years, he is recaptured by Renwick to be genetically altered, only to escape again. Now that James has to face life as a freak of nature, or more so than before, he bands with other escaped test subjects to rebel against and overthrow Renwick. Meet Allyssa Dennis. After meeting and becoming close friends with James, she learns of the existence of the Red Bat, an urban legend rumored to be inhuman.

Along with this knowledge comes a few perks; getting to know a motley crew of runaway test subjects and becoming deeply involved in the war against Malcolm Renwick. It's not easy being the only human in your social circle Allyssa finds that bravery is the only thing that will keep her alive in this battle.

Meet Claire Rushbrooke, also known as the Red Bat, or simply Shadow to her friends. She's been hiding around Toronto for years, saving the day and keeping up appearances as the all-around superhero. Her life before becoming the Red Bat, however, was anything but enjoyable. Born into wealth, her home life was tense and unhappy, as she could never please her scornful mother, who looked upon her as her no-good ex-husband's 'spawn'. Her mother died, leaving a nine-year-old Claire alone in the world. After being shuffled around foster homes for about a year, she was finally adopted by Renwick, who took her home and used her as another one of his experiments.Claire, renaming herself Shadow, is now twenty years old and ready to bring Renwick's entire operation crashing to the ground.

Meet Milo Henderson. Sent to live with his grandfather after his mother died and his stepfather landed himself in prison, he's known Renwick since he was nine. Which is no big surprise, seeing as Milo's grandfather once owned and operated the lab Renwick now calls his own. Since his grandfather's death, Milo had to stand by and watch as Renwick took over and turned Henderson Research Labs into RenwickLabs. Milo had no way of preventing Renwick's experimentations, and he grew up nursing a deep hatred for all Renwick lived for.

Now that Renwick's taken the liberty of altering Milo's genetic structure, not to mention removing his vocal chords to keep things secret, Milo's finally had enough. Meet Milo2. Yes, that is his name. Milo2 is, in case you couldn't guess, Milo's clone. And, yes, Milo was cloned. Neither of them is happy about this; Milo thinks of it as a personal insult, and Milo2 spends every day wishing he were dead. Milo2 was created by Renwick to be used as a weapon, to bring back James and Shadow and force them to cooperate. Although he lives for violence of any kind, self-inflicted or not, Milo2 can't stand the fact that he isn't truly a person in his creator's mind. To Renwick, he is a mere tool, not a living being. This only hurts Milo2 and pushes him to rebellion; he'll have his revenge on Renwick whether he lives to tell about it or not.

James, Allyssa, Shadow, and Milo, all of them fed up with the tragic way their lives are headed, begin a war against Renwick and everything he believes in. But they have another problem to worry about: Milo2 has escaped, as well, and he doesn't care who gets hurt when he takes his vengeance. He refuses to side with anyone, believing he needs no one's help. Soon it becomes a three-sided war, with Renwick and his army of test subjects on one side, James and his group of renegades on another side, and Milo2 by himself on the remaining side. On the way to victory, James has to learn to cope with his new life, Allyssa has to find bravery, Shadow has to come out of hiding, Milo has to let go of his past, and Milo2 has to figure himself out. And a certain scientist's empire must finally fall. This is their story.
